iStock_000004638277XSmallWe’ve been so busy enjoying these first beautiful days of Fall and then it hit us.   Yikes!  Fall!  Already!  There are only 90 days left of this year!  Where has 2009 gone and oh, by the way, where are we with all our goals and resolutions?  Hmmmm. Yep, we admit it, we might have lost our focus.  And what about you?   For many of us this has been a year of just hanging on.   Right or wrong, we’ve been a little hesitant to stretch too far out of our comfort zone, take too many risks.

Here’s a thought… since we do have 90 days left, let’s just pick ourselves and that list of goals up, dust them off, and get going.   Take another look at that list.  Do your goals still feel right?  Maybe some need to be tweaked or removed altogether?   But, here’s the point…instead of thinking “too late for this year” and crawling back under the covers, why not think about what you can still create?  Now…while it’s still 2009.

Ask yourself “What one thing can I do right now?”   Start with something small and then DO IT.   Then ask the question again and you’re on your way.  It really is easy and it really does start with taking the first step!

Here’s another great idea.  Start getting your ducks in a row now and make 2010 your breakthrough year.

Register for the  Life on Purpose Retreat.   We guarantee you’ll get those duckies lined up and paddling into high gear.

“Sometime in your life, you will go on a journey.  It will be the longest journey you have ever taken.  It is the journey to find yourself.” Katherine Sharp

goldfish jumping out of the water

If you are anything like me, you probably always thought that only a few special people were artistic or creative and no matter how hard you tried, you weren’t ever going to be one of “them”.   Personally, I always thought creative and artistic were interchangeable.  I only thought of being creative in the artistic sense.    I have dabbled in all manner of artistic/creative pursuits (water color painting, photography, pottery to name a few).  I always started with high hopes that this time my hidden artist would emerge, but after a short time, I gave up in dismay convinced that there was no hope for me.  I just wasn’t a creative person.

Well, who knew then how wrong I was!  Creative thinking has little to do with your ability to paint a perfect still life.  In fact there has been a lot of research done on creativity lately and it appears that our capacity for creativity – our brainpower – is much greater than we could ever imagine.    Apparently we have ALL been gifted with a birthright of unlimited creative potential.   The key is to recognize our own potential and then figure out how to tap into the well.

Creativity comes from an open mind, an ability to look at things from a different perspective, and from a willingness to take risks and experience failure.  Creative thinking occurs when we challenge our long held assumptions and realize there is often more than one right answer.   Next time you are faced with a problem, consider asking yourself “How would I look at this situation if I was six years old?”  You’ll get the most amazing insight and sometimes…just the right answer.

ingrid Would you like to learn more about finding or re-kindling your own creativity?   Our Flourish Salon on Thursday evening, July 16th, with guest presenter Ingrid Kincaid is called “Creativity, the Play that Pays”.  If you’re in Portland, come join us for an evening of fun, creative inspiration and coloring outside of the lines.

“Success is not the key to happiness. Happiness is the key to success.” ~Albert Schweitzer

So, what has science learned about what makes us happy? More than you might think…and a few surprising things that don’t really ring our inner chimes. Turns out, that for all the lovely things it allows us to buy, money really doesn’t make us happier. Youth? Not so much!

Want to know exactly what does make us happy? It’s time to explore the Science of Happiness. It’s caused a revolution in psychotherapy. It’s the topic of the most popular course ever offered at Harvard. And it can transform how you feel about your job. Positive psychology often referred to as “happiness studies”- offers proven evidence of what makes some people happier than others. Ellen Raim has become an expert on the science of happiness and shares her knowledge with us. Ellen will speak to us about happiness in general, happiness at work and offer concrete advice on what actions we can take to make change. Come to this talk and leave thinking differently about yourself, your colleagues, your work and maybe even your life.
